Duties and Responsibilities

The UN in Tanzania is preparing its Annual Results Report for 2023/2024, which will provide an overview of the key achievements, challenges, and activities undertaken during the year, in line with the organization’s strategic goals and objectives. The report will highlight progress towards achieving outcomes, results, and impacts and showcase the effectiveness of the organization’s interventions across various sectors. The report is intended for a diverse audience, including donors, partners, stakeholders, and the general public. As such, it needs to be concise, focused on key results, aligned with the UN’s communication standards, and able to present information in a visually engaging manner. To ensure the report is impactful and efficiently communicates the most important outcomes, the UN seeks the services of a professional editor to analyse, summarize, and streamline the content while ensuring editorial quality and will work under the supervision of the Head of RCO The editor will be responsible for the following tasks:

  •  Content Analysis and Prioritization: Thoroughly review the draft report, identifying the most significant and impactful results. Work with the relevant teams to prioritize these results and condense the report, ensuring key messages and outcomes are retained.
  •  Summarizing and Restructuring: Shorten the content from approximately 50 pages to no more than 20 pages, ensuring a concise, coherent, and logically structured document. Focus on simplifying complex sections while maintaining the integrity of the results.
  •  Copyediting: Conduct copyediting of the report to correct grammar, punctuation, syntax, and flow. Ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with the UN’s editorial standards and inclusive language guidelines.
  •  Results-Based Language: Ensure the report clearly articulates outcomes and results, following Results-Based Management (RBM) principles.
  •  Infographic Content Identification: Highlight content that could be visually represented through infographics or visual elements to enhance the report’s readability and engagement with its audience.
  •  Consistency Check: Ensure consistency in terminology, facts, figures, and acronyms throughout the report. Verify all references and data points for accuracy.
  •  Inclusive Language: Ensure the use of gender-inclusive and non-discriminatory language, in line with the UN’s Gender-Inclusive Language Policy.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field. A minimum of 10 years of experience in content editing and copyediting, preferably in the context of international organizations or development agencies is required. Proven experience in summarizing, restructuring, and editing large reports, particularly those related to development, human rights, or international cooperation is desirable. Familiarity with the UN editorial guidelines, results-based reporting, and gender-inclusive language.

Languages

Excellent command of English, both written and spoken is required.
