Earthworks Manager (1 position)

Reports to: Construction Manager

Roster: 6 Weeks on, 3 Weeks Off roster

Duty Station: Nyanzaga, Sengerema, Mwanza

Contract Type: Specified Period of Time contract

Position Purpose

The Earthworks Manager will be responsible for overseeing all earthworks operations at the Nyanzaga site, ensuring that excavation, grading, and related activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications and environmental regulations. This role requires effective management of personnel, equipment, and resources to achieve project milestones within established timelines and budgets.

Roles and Responsibilities

Management of Safety, Environment, & Community Relations

  • Review employment and working conditions to ensure legal compliance.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures regarding safety, environment, health, and community.
  • Develop and enforce comprehensive safety procedures specific to earthworks operations to ensure a hazard-free environment for all personnel.
  • Monitor earthworks activities to ensure adherence to environmental regulations and sustainable practices, minimizing ecological impact.

Operations

  • Oversee daily earthworks operations, ensuring compliance with design specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations.
  • Monitor project expenditures related to earthworks, ensuring alignment with the approved budget and implementing cost-control measures as needed.
  • Understand and apply the requirements in project documents with regard to quality control procedures such as testing, shop drawings, material approvals, samples, mock-ups, execution of the work, etc.
  • Become familiar with each job estimate for general condition items and follow the direction of the General Superintendent with regard to performing work within the boundaries of the estimate.
  • Determine and allocate necessary resources, including materials, equipment, and labour, to meet project objectives efficiently.
  • Create detailed schedules for earthworks activities, outlining project milestones and deadlines to ensure timely completion.
  • Conduct thorough assessments to identify potential risks in earthworks operations and develop mitigation strategies to address them proactively.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with all stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and team members, to provide updates and address concerns.
  • Implement rigorous quality control procedures to ensure all earthworks meet established standards and specifications.

People and Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the earthworks team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and implement development plans to enhance team effectiveness and productivity.

Qualification/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Proven track record of managing earthworks projects in compliance with safety and environmental standards.
  • Proficiency in project management software and tools.
  • 7 years relevant experience in earthworks supervision or a similar role.
  • In-depth understanding of earthworks operations, construction methodologies, and safety regulations pertinent to the Tanzanian context.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and implementing civil engineering plans and specifications related to earthworks.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical principles and the ability to assess soil properties and their impact on construction activities.
  • Experience with GPS machine control systems and other advanced earthmoving technologies to enhance precision and efficiency.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by ensuring standards and any legal regulations are complied with.
  • Enhance the company’s reputation by exploring opportunities to add value to projects and communicating this with clients.
  • Seek out, communicate, obtain approvals for change, and implement various improvements in methodology to improve project safety, quality, budget, and timeframe.
  • Provide planning and logistical support.
  • Must be able to read and interpret plans/drawings and as-constructed drawings.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook, and Excel).
  • Familiarity with local regulations and community engagement practices in Tanzania.
