Lutheran World Relief is seeking an Extension Services and Training Lead for a five-year USDA project designed to develop and transform small and medium enterprise (SMEs) poultry value chain into sustainable commercial business in Tanzania. The project will strengthen the feed sector and incorporate climate-smart technologies, improve animal health management practices, Capacity building in agricultural finance services, and strengthening the extension and service providers in Mbeya, Iringa, Songwe, and Rukwa. The position will be based in Mbeya, Tanzania, and report to the Deputy Chief of Party.
We are seeking to recruit the following positions for a five-year USDA project that is designed to develop and transform small and medium enterprise (SMEs) poultry value chain into sustainable commercial business in Tanzania. The project will strengthen the feed sector and incorporating climate smart technologies; Improved animal health management practices; Capacity building in agricultural finance services; and strengthen of the extension and service providers. The positions will be based at the project office in Mbeya, Tanzania.
Extension Services and Training Lead is the principal lead and subject matter expert on agricultural extension services and training of the Kuku Biashara project. S/He will coordinate and supervise all training and extension services of the project, working closely with other technical staff to ensure high-quality extension and training approaches are implemented, training and learnings are shared across the project, performance improvement is documented and reported in the project’s reporting, and successes are summarized and disseminated up to project leadership and the donor. The Extension Services and Training Lead will report to Deputy Chief of Party. She/he will have the following specific duties and responsibilities:
- Lead the development and implementation of a systematic extension and training strategy – working collaboratively with other project leads and subject matter experts.
- Lead standardizing technical content, training curricula, and other technical extension materials.
- Build the capacity of all relevant project staff to undertake regular, consistent, and effective extension services and training.
- Drive agricultural extension service delivery among farmers, farmer associations and organizations and coordinate review and reflection of the value of the trainings’ offered.
- Supervises sub-grantees undertaking bird extension services, ensuring quality and consistent support to sector actors.
- Lead deployment of SBC campaigns to increase farmer knowledge on better and economic GAHP of poultry.
- Lead the day-to-day implementation of all extension services and training activities more specifically the farmer field school and other extension models aimed at growing farmer productivity and incomes.
- Facilitate and provide guidance to farmers on appropriate cropping patterns, farming system techniques through establishment of demo plots to promote adoption of good agricultural practices.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with relevant stakeholders (private and public sector actors) and represent the organization effectively by participating in external engagement with partners at the community, LGA and State levels.
- Prepare and edit reports, manuals, and guidelines for extension services and trainings.
- Actively engage with digital technologies and approaches that will enhance LWR’s impact and scale while gaining operational efficiency.
- Support monitoring & evaluation activities in coordination with the M&E unit and ensure contribution to timely completion of project performance tools.
- Perform any other duties as required by and instructed by the supervisor.
Required Skills and Experience
- Degree in agriculture economics and agribusiness, applied agriculture extension, agriculture, animal husbandry or a related area
- Knowledge in animal husbandry, agriculture, value chain development, food and nutrition security programs, specifically experience in poultry, soybean, sunflower and sorghum value chains.
- Six years of progressively senior experience working with extension and advisory services on farming and livestock sector productivity.
- Experienced trainer and facilitator with exceptional skills in designing curricula and conducting skills-building workshops and implementing other capacity strengthening approaches with a variety of stakeholders, from government officials, program managers, and implementers to civil society organizations, representatives of diverse community groups, and faith-based groups.
- Experience with the implementation of climate smart agriculture (CSA), agribusiness and market system strengthening interventions among smallholder farmer cooperatives in rural communities.
- Previous experience building partnerships across the private and public sectors, community-based stakeholders and other relevant agricultural agencies/institutions in Tanzania.
- Experience working in an international organization
- Well organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently.
- Fluency in English (written and spoken): Fluency in Swahili is preferred; English is required.
