PURPOSE OF THE ROLE: 

The role exists to build organizational capability (people, structure, systems, process) within the underground mine geology team to deliver the budget and Life of Mine (LOM) plan. The role incumbent is expected to manage Grade Control (GC) drilling programmes in alignment to LOM plan and Strategic Options, provide geological input into mine planning and underground ore production to optimize ore recovery and minimize dilution for development and stope mining. The role holder will also be accountable to develop and deliver the annual underground mine geology budget based on the approved options and managing the drilling contractor to achieve a standard of excellence in performance.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

•    A tertiary qualification in Geology.

•    A Post graduate Geology qualification – added advantage.

 

EXPERIENCE:

•    8 -10 years of experience in mining industry particularly with mine geology or other relevant work experiences.

MAIN OR KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

i.    Manage Grade Control (GC) drilling programmes with alignment to LOM plan and Strategic Options.

•    Planning and execution of GC drilling to achieve optimal drill spacing and ore zone coverage.

•    Report drilling results and support update of GC models for mine planning.

•    Execution of GC drilling in accordance with HSE guiding principles, eliminating risks associated with drilling ie unplanned breakthrough, dust, noise, manual handling.

•    Ensure GC drilling is completed to a high standard ensuring quality of sampling in accordance with AGA Sampling and QAQC guidelines.

•    Provide feedback to Exploration team to update geological model and to maximize the probability of underground orebody extension.

•    Through inspections and audits and effective frontline supervision, monitor the effective implementation of critical controls and adherence to safe work methods.

ii.  Provide geological input into mine planning and underground ore production to optimize ore recovery and minimize dilution for development and stope mining.

•    Assign tonnes, grade, density and Geomet parameters for release of final stope design.

•    Ensure stope analysis is completed to evaluate over-break and underbreak, and for tracking of recovery factors for mine planning.

•    Coordinate updates to integrated planning models for input into mine planning.

•    Manage production tracking systems ie Connected Mine to record total movement of underground ore and waste, including truck sampling.

•    Report on mine production and track ore mined versus planned, including management of stockpile balance and rehandle of transit stockpiled ore to Main ROM

•    Track Resource to GC to Mining Design to Mined Actual +/- Stockpile Balance for reconciliation on monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis in accordance with AGA Reconciliation Code.

iii.  Complete underground mapping and sampling to provide input into mine development, and for development of geological models and building geological understanding.

•    Implement underground mine geology mapping and sampling programmes.

•    Produce level plans with mine geology and sampling results.

•    Build and construct geological models and communicate geological understanding.

iv.  Construct and deliver the annual underground mine geology budget based on the approved options, modifying the operating plan, and forecast when necessary to mitigate threats to achieving budget to achieve targets in terms of ore                  tonnes and grade delivered for processing, exploration outcomes, service delivery, operating costs, capital costs and project deliverables.

•    Construct the underground mine geology budget for the approved option per the business planning timetable.

•    Complete and update monthly forecasts to reflect results or performance obtained, program progress and cost.

•    Identified threats to the delivery of the budget (e.g. resource reconciliation, drilling results, and mine geology) with contingency plans developed to protect the plan.

•    Complete ongoing risk assessment and communicate risk mitigation for meeting budget and forecast goals and targets.

v.    Manage the drilling contractor to achieve a standard of excellence in performance, productivity, costs, community engagement, risk management, quality management, safety and environmental performance, site culture, values, and                  behaviours.

•    Monitor and manage the contractor according to the specifications as stipulated in the contract and hold the contractor accountable for their actions.

•    Ensure Contractor alignment to our objectives in terms of Quality, Quantity, Time and Cost.

•    Monitor and manage the contractor according to the specifications as stipulated in the contract and hold the contractor accountable for deviation.

vi.  Report performance to plans, keeping Senior Manager informed of variances to plans, any foreseeable risks or impediments to plan and budget delivery, the steps being taken to ameliorate these risks to maintain sustainable operations.

•    Ensure an effective underground mine geology reporting system is in place integrating all functional results and information.

•    KPI’s developed for key processes and filtered through all levels of the team.

•    Monthly review of performance to date is completed against all appropriate targets and measured.

•    Significant variances to plan identified, risk assessed and addressed through appropriate direct reports.

•    Senior Manager appropriately informed of actual performance, risks, and opportunities.

•    Reconciliation reports prepared including analysis and recommendations for improvement in mine geology, estimation, stockpile management, mining, and processing areas.

vii. Develop systems for the work, integrating processes managed to provide effective planning of work, efficient and safe work practices, monitoring of performance and promote continuous improvement.

•    Efficiently and effectively delivered services and production strategies are implemented to provide information required by site wide clients.

•    Optimize the systems and processes ensuring the work is understood and the right work is done by the right people at the right time.

•   Improvement plans developed, tracked/monitored, and implemented for continuous improvement.

viii. Build organizational capability (people, structure, systems, process) within the underground mine geology team to deliver the budget and LOM plan.

•    Appropriately structured, capable operating team in place with the skills required.

•    Professional development and succession plan in place as per Site requirements

•    Team has the required materials, resources and Labor provided, including skills and capabilities.

•    Complete performance effectiveness appraisals and review.

ix.  Implement and deliver compliance to site HSE Policies, management systems and processes within the Underground Mine Geology department.

•    Tasks identified from the HSE plan for the underground mine geology team completed in a timely manner.

•    HSE improvement initiatives tabled for consideration for inclusion in strategy and plan developed by the HSE.

•    Department adherence to legislation and regulatory approvals.

•    Risks identified, critical controls implemented, action plans to reduce threats developed, budgeted, resourced, and completed to plan.

•    Contribute to Department HSE Plan.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

•    Background in Mine Geology and Exploration

•    Knowledge of sampling, assaying, and drilling methodologies

•    Broad understanding of other mining disciplines including Mining, Geotechnical, Processing and Financial Analysis.

•    Knowledge of grade control methodologies, production/mining, and reconciliation value chains.
