I – Hierarchical relationship 

The Study Nurse will report directly to the CUTTS Program Manager  and to the Harm Reduction Coordinator as the Head of Harm Reduction Department and have a functional link with the Study Coordinator. 

II – Global objective of the position 

The Study Nurse will ensure the integrity and quality of the research are maintained and conducted in accordance with the study protocols, guidelines and regulations of Tanzania. This position is primarily responsible for the accurate recruitment and selection of study participants and collection of information per the protocols, protecting the health, safety, and welfare of research participants.  

III – Tasks and responsibilities 

A. Recruitment and follow-up of study participants  

  • Participates in recruitment and selection of study participants by interviewing and documenting medical history to determine compliance with eligibility requirements. 
  • Provides health talks at the facility and/or outreach sites giving a brief overview of the study to participants. 
  • Conducts consenting process according to the principles of good clinical practice. 
  • Screens interested potential participants as per the pre-enrolment eligibility screening checklist. 
  • Provides counselling and testing for HIV, HCV, HBV (and HBV vaccination where relevant).  
  • Collects samples for HCV RNA test and other supplemental tests. 
  • Fills in data in each visit in the appropriate CRFs. 
  • Conducts interviews and performs clinical measurements and tests according to the study SOPs 
  • Provides study participants with health education and medical information – to understand medication dosage, administration, disease treatment and referral to further care as needed. 
  •   Dispense investigational medications, according to the prescription of the Medical Doctors, and performs assessments during clinic visit. 
  • Accurately documents participants’ information in the study electronic database. 
  • Builds a positive relationship with study participants and staff of the selected study site (referral hospital/s) 
  • Provides counselling to female participants and refers them (accompanied by a peer educator) to a clinic for SRH services 
  • Refers the patient to the facility social worker when the need arises.

 

B.  Follow-up  

  • Follows up, in collaboration with the outreach worker and peers, on participants for study visits. 
  • Identifies study participants who defaulted and shares information with outreach worker for tracing. 
  • Record and report adverse effects to the doctor and Principal Investigator in a timely manner 
  • Respects PWID and provides care in an ethical non-discriminatory manner. 
  • Ensures all activities are carried out in compliance with the study protocol. 
  • Support medical /health care related activities  
  • Support SRH team in sensitization, health education /awareness raising of heath related matters as relevant and required in the field  
  • support the SRH team in testing and vaccination upon request  
  • Support implementing partners (CSOs) in health-care related activities upon request and approval of line manager  
  • Join the outreach workers to assess the status/health care needs of clients (PWUD/PWID), report and propose appropriate measures 

 

C. Support in capacity building of MdM team.  

  • Facilitate learning sessions for MdM team e.g orientation of the tools of the study, sharing good practices  
  • Collaborate with the study coordinator as relevant  
  • Support program manager and Harm Reduction Coordinator in preparation of tools/ presentations for awareness raising (common health issues, emerging health issues in the country and those of public health concerns etc.) and serve as facilitator/co-facilitator  
  • Regularly follow the ministry of health and government of Tanzania for any update and interventions required in case of public health emergency 

Requested profile  

Educational background 

  • Essential  
  • Diploma in nursing with valid license for practice  
  • Desirable  
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing with a valid license for practice  
  • Training in Research ethics and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) 

Professional Experience  

  • Essential  
  • At least 2 years of research experience in a clinical trial or prospective cohort study 
  • Experience of clinic practice for at least 3 years either in public or private sector 
  • Experience in working with Key Populations / harm reduction programs for people who use drugs  
  • Desirable  
  • Having (co)authored a peer-reviewed publication in the past 3 years is an added advantage

Conditions of employment 

  • Gross Salary: 1 978 411 Tanzanian Shillings  (per month)
  • Transportation and Food allowances 200 000 Tanzania Shillings per month 
  • Additional Benefits: Health insurance 
  • Work Hours: 8
