The primary purpose of a Music Teacher's job is to prepare lesson plans and instruct students in practical methods and theory of general music, singing, as well as playing musical instruments. Create an enjoyable learning environment to inspire young minds and help them grow in appreciation of music. A music teacher should be skilled in playing musical instruments, planning concerts for student participation, and creating after school music clubs.

Jonathan Gloag Academy (JGA) was founded to educate the orphaned and destitute children of Kenya Children’s Homes (formerly Thomas Barnardo House) alongside fee paying pupils. From the beginning, all profits from the school have been used to enable the charitable purposes of Kenya Children’s Homes (KCH) to help provide education and care to vulnerable children.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and prepare and deliver music lessons
  •  Ensure complete syllabus coverage
  •  Teaching general styles of music
  •  Teaching singing and/ or musical instruments to students from beginner to advanced level
  •  Incorporating Preparing students for concerts and planned music experiences
  •  Preparing students for practicals and exams
  •  Inspiring and motivating students to extend themselves to after school music clubs
  •  Research and implement new teaching methods
  •  Tracking, recording and reporting students’ performance and progress
  •  Ensure consistency and improvement in curriculum delivery through teamwork and collaborative planning
  •  Serve as a role model and maintain learner discipline to create a conducive environment for learning
  •  Ensure safety and health of learners
  •  Participate in workshops/seminars to share ideas and enhance knowledge
  •  Facilitate and Engage in learners co-curricular and after-school music clubs so as to identify, nurture and develop talents
  •  Collect, collate and maintain all school records such as; enrolment, teaching and learning resources, evaluation records, attendance registers;
  •  Support Marketing team with marketing activities and events

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must be a Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Music Education holder or equivalent from a university recognized by the government of Kenya
  • ABRSM grade 4, or equivalent, will be an added advantage.
  • Should be an excellent teacher with at least 2 years of proven experience with curriculum- based competency (CBC) in a similar role
  • Proficiency in musical instruments, preferably brass or woodwind instruments.
  • Vocal Coaching ability will be an added advantage.
  • Meets Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution.
  • Registered by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC)
  • Excellent Computer Skills, Information Systems, MS Office and Databases
