    Job Purpose:

    • The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) will bridge clinical practice and health information technology, driving the strategic direction of clinical informatics to enhance patient care, research, education, and operational efficiency within the academic hospital. This role will work closely with clinical leaders, IT teams, and administrative stakeholders to ensure the seamless integration of technology into clinical workflows, aligning with the hospital’s mission of excellence in healthcare, teaching, and innovation.

    Responsibilities

    Strategic Leadership 

    • Develop and execute the hospital’s clinical informatics strategy, ensuring alignment with institutional goals;
    • Identify opportunities for leveraging AI and machine learning (ML) to solve clinical challenges, improve operational efficiency, and enhance patient outcomes;
    • Collaborate with clinical leaders to integrate data-driven insights into clinical decision-making processes and operational efficiency.

    Project Oversight

    • Guide the adoption and optimization of health information systems, including Electronic Health Records; (EHR), digital diagnostic workflows, and clinical decision-support tools, that align with AKU's vision and mission;
    • Lead efforts in incorporating AI and machine learning in clinical workflows, predictive analytics, and risk stratification, ensuring ethical deployment and physician oversight;
    • Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing improvement of clinical information systems to support evidence-based practices, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives;
    • Ensure systems support evidence-based practice, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives;
    • Collaborate with data analytics teams to leverage clinical data for research, reporting, and population health management, focusing on preventive healthcare initiatives within the Aga Khan University health system.

    Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

    • Act as the primary liaison between clinicians, IT departments, and administrative leaders to facilitate communication, address clinical needs, and drive system enhancements;
    • Facilitate communication and feedback loops to address clinical needs and system enhancement.

    Team Management

    • Lead and mentor informatics team, fostering professional development within the team;
    • Address skills gaps by overseeing onboarding and continuous training programs to enhance digital literacy and informatics education among clinicians, medical students, residents and staff;
    • Coordinate cross-functional collaboration between technical teams, clinicians, and staff.

    Ethical Governance

    • Establish frameworks and policies for responsible data management and practical use of health IT, ensuring compliance with ethical standards, regulations, and medical research guidelines;
    • Implement governance strategies for data quality, integrity, privacy, and security in handling sensitive patient data.

    Requirements

    Qualifications & Skills required:

    • Medical degree (MD or equivalent) with active clinical practice experience;
    • Advanced training or certification in clinical informatics;
    • Proven leadership experience in healthcare technology implementation;
    • Strong understanding of EHR and LIS systems, interoperability standards, and clinical workflows;
    • Evidence of excellent communication, problem-solving, and change management skills.

    Chief Medical Officer and Associate Dean Clinical Affairs

    Job Purpose:

    • The Chief Medical Officer and Associate Dean Clinical Affairs will provide oversight on medical governance, ensuring quality, appropriate delivery of medical services at AKUH-N and advising the executive on medical matters to achieve safe patient care in association with the education and research programmes of the University.

    Responsibilities

    Strategic Leadership 

    • Participate in the strategy planning of the division as well as facilitate services across the division that has a significant impact on the performance or business outcome of the organization or sub- functions in the organization;
    • Participate actively in long term (5 years or more) planning within clearly defined policies, principles and objectives to facilitate work across the organization;
    • Identify external developments to take advantage of changes in the long-term within broad area of responsibility;
    • Evaluate risk and business trade-offs and update develop the optimal business solutions and results.

    Medical Care Coverage

    • Planning for adequate medical staff availability in patient care areas;
    • Recruiting, credentialing and privileging medical staff;
    • Chair of the credentialing committee.

    Medical Governance

    • Guide the development, approval and implementation of specific clinical practice and patient care related policies and procedures;
    • Serve as a key bridge between clinical care and education and research in the process of developing, implementing and interpreting policies, programmes and activities;
    • Chair of the joint staff committee;
    • Monitoring performance of medical staff;
    • Establish terms of reference and credentialing criteria for each faculty position with quality performance indicators for clinical practice, education and research activities;
    • Ensuring quality, appropriate delivery of medical services at the AKUH-N and advising the executive on medical matters, to achieve safe patient care.

    Quality and Patient Safety

    • Planning and setting priorities for hospital wide quality improvement and patient safety activities;
    • Monitoring clinical activities and adverse events;
    • Proposing and assigning improvement actions to relevant clinical or managerial stakeholders and/or committees;
    • Review patient complaints and ensure a satisfactory resolution thereof with proper corrective and preventive actions;
    • Establishing systems and methods for reviewing the quality and appropriateness of clinical care and other health-related services;
    • Ensuring continuing professional development and medical education.

    Academic Research for Undergraduate Medical Programme

    • Provide support to the work of the Associate Dean, Medical Education and the curriculum committee as well as other educational committees;
    • Ensure the provision of hospital resources to support education and research programmes including teaching space, appropriate access to patients, on-call accommodation etc.;
    • Coordinate the activities of the Faculty within the Hospital;
    • Development of Awards process;
    • Participate in curriculum implementation;
    • Supervise student projects;
    • Conduct research.

    Stakeholder Engagement

    • Representing the hospital at professional forums, regulatory bodies and other healthcare organizations;
    • Maintain and monitor changing regulatory, social, economic and political factors that affect healthcare;
    • Participate in activities of the professional and regulatory bodies;
    • Liaison with the relevant organizations in medical related matters.

    Requirements

    Qualifications & Skills required:

    • Postgraduate degree in medical specialty;
    • Appointable as Assistant Professor or higher;
    • Ten years specialist medical practice, clinical credibility and at least three years of service as Department or Section Head;
    • Proven leadership experience in healthcare administration or medical education and articulating a philosophy of quality improvement;
    • Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills;
    • Evidence of excellent communication, problem-solving, and change management skills.
