    About the Consultancy

    Short introduction

The Transformational Power of Language’ is a growing focus within our work to reframe the narrative and language used to describe and position FGM. Typically, FGM has been described and understood as a ‘cultural practice’ a tradition, or a ‘norm’ – language which can serve to excuse or defend it and can alienate survivors by minimising its seriousness. We aim to shift the narrative to describe FGM as a form of violence and abuse against women and girls, and a violent, criminal act, that is generated by inequality and discriminatory social norms.

Summary purpose and objective of role

    • Create engaging tools and communications product to bring the power of language to life
    •  Develop a short (1 – 2 minute) animation using moving image and text – which conveys the meaning behind the content as well as explains it literally.
    •  Visually represent diverse African settings and highlight women and girls at the centre with suitable music/sound

    Person specification

    • Proven animation background with experience creating short-form explainer or advocacy videos
    • Ability to deliver products according to the specified technical requirements
    • Ability to tell powerful, clear stories through visuals and motion, using minimal but impactful text
    • Strong understanding of sensitive storytelling, particularly around issues of gender, violence, or community norms
    • Experience delivering broadcast-ready video content, with revisions and in multiple formats (MP4, social media specs, etc.)
    • Collaborative approach to creative development, including ideation, scripting, and iteration
    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to deadlines

    Desirable skills and competencies

    • Familiarity with FGM, gender-based violence, or other social justice themes in Africa
    • Experience creating content for nonprofits, advocacy campaigns, or social movements
    • Ability to include music, sound design, or voiceover that enhances emotional tone
    • Knowledge of or connection to African cultural and regional diversity in visual style and representation
    • Knowledge of ethical standards in reporting on issues related to FGM/C will be an asset.
    • Ability to incorporate and adhere to TGG-ALMs Do No Harm guidelines

    Requirements

    • CV (profiling your professional experience and suitability for the job)
    • Portfolio with relevant animation work
    • Short proposal or concept sketch (optional but encouraged)
