Job Description
Position Title: Community Engagement Specialist
Project: Vunja Mduara Campaign
Reports To: Campaign Manager
Location: Tanzania (flexible, with frequent fieldwork)
Overview
The Vunja Mduara Campaign is a transformative initiative aimed at increasing sickle cell disease awareness and youth screening across Tanzania. We are seeking a Community Engagement Specialist with a passion for change, excellent interpersonal skills, and a proven ability to connect with diverse communities to drive participation and impact. This individual will play a pivotal role in engaging different communities including but not limited to schools, corporate organizations, faith-based institutions, community groups, and political entities to achieve the project’s screening targets.
Key Responsibilities
Community Outreach & Engagement
- Identify and establish relationships with schools, corporates, faith-based organizations, and local community groups to promote sickle cell screening.
- Build partnerships with leaders and influencers in targeted communities to advocate for participation in the campaign.
- Develop tailored engagement strategies to resonate with each community’s values and priorities.
Sales and Mobilization
- Promote the screening services effectively, utilizing sales techniques to achieve participation targets.
- Coordinate and deliver presentations, workshops, and community meetings to generate awareness and encourage involvement.
- Track and analyze outreach efforts to maximize community participation and identify new engagement opportunities.
Strategic Planning & Coordination
- Collaborate with the Campaign Manager to develop community engagement plans that align with the project’s goals.
- Organize and oversee on-the-ground activities, such as health fairs, school events, and corporate wellness days, to facilitate screenings.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of engagement activities and propose adjustments to improve outcomes.
Communications and Reporting
- Act as the primary point of contact for engaged communities, providing clear information and responding to inquiries.
- Prepare and submit regular reports on engagement progress, challenges, and recommendations for improvement.
- Work closely with the marketing team to ensure campaign materials are relevant and culturally sensitive.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Community Development, Public Health, or a related field.
- At least 3 years of experience in community engagement, sales, or similar roles (experience in non-profit or health-related initiatives is a plus).
- Strong understanding of diverse Tanzanian communities, cultures, and dynamics.

- Flexibility & Resilience: Comfortable working in dynamic environments with frequent travel and irregular hours.
Additional Requirements
- Fluent in English and Swahili (oral and written).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Willingness to travel extensively within Tanzania.
