VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE POSITION OF DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR ACADEMIC, RESEARCH AND CONSULTANCY

The Council of State University of Zanzibar seeks to recruit a Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic, Research, and Consultancy from suitably qualified and competent Tanzanian candidates with excellent credentials. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Research, and Consultancy shall work under the directive of the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Qualifications and Experience:

The candidates should possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Holder of a PhD degree from a recognized higher learning institution.
  • Be at least at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at the time of application.
  • Have at least seven (7) years working experience in higher learning institutions, with at least four (4) years in a managerial position.
  • Have the capacity to promote learning and extension in a competitive environment.
  • Possess leadership skills to effectively coordinate academic and administrative functions.
  • Be accomplished scholars with proven track records in formulating and managing academic and administrative programs as well as supervising and mentoring postgraduate students.
  • Proven capacity to promote learning, teaching, research, and development in higher learning institutions.
  • Knowledge of national laws and policies, specifically in educational and public service laws.
  • Be of high ethical standards, integrity, and professionalism, adhering to the national Constitution on leadership and integrity.
  • Have excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Be no older than 57 years by November 2024, when the post is scheduled to be occupied.

Tenure:

The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research, and Consultancy shall serve the office for a term of three (3) years and may be re-appointed for another term of three (3) years, subject to the Council’s recommendations and approval of the Chancellor based on evidence of excellent performance.

Remuneration:

The remuneration will be according to the State University of Zanzibar salary scales.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor responsible for Academic, Research, and Consultancy shall be the head of the Academic Division and will oversee all academic matters of the University. He or she is the principal assistant to the Vice-Chancellor in all matters pertaining to academic affairs, research, and consultancy services. In the absence of the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor will perform the functions of the Vice-Chancellor.

As a principal assistant to the Vice-Chancellor on academic matters, the successful applicant shall:

  1. Be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor regarding academic, research, and consultancy matters.
  2. Facilitate the learning (through teaching) of academic programs in the University.
  3. Be responsible for the smooth running and development of academic programs.
  4. Advise on all matters pertaining to academic management, quality control, and assurance.
  5. Evaluate the current academic progress of the University and recommend future programs.
  6. Recommend appropriate budgets for Schools, Institutes, Directorates, and Research Centres.
  7. Oversee research and consultancy activities at Schools, Institutes, Directorates, and Research Centres.
  8. Coordinate the development and establishment of academic programs and the management of academic resources.
  9. Maintain collaboration and linkages with local and international institutions of higher learning for academic, research, and innovation programs.
  10. Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the Vice-Chancellor or the University Council.
