A.P. Møller-Mærsk Tanzania seeks a skilled and experienced professional for the position of Legal Counsel based in Dar es Salaam.
The role involves overseeing legal matters for Maersk’s Eastern Africa Area, with a primary focus on Tanzania. The successful candidate will report directly to the Eastern Africa Area Legal Manager.
Key responsibilities
- Proactive business partner for country management and commercial functions and providing legal advisory support on corporate and legal issues to all functions in the area.
- Providing legal support on cross functional projects and initiatives with a view to ensuring legal risks are minimized and business objectives are achieved.
- Flagging risks with a commercial and pragmatic approach towards problem solving. Coming up with initiatives to improve the legal service offering.
- Research and advising on local and international law issues as well as relevant legislation affecting the Area.
- Advice and support on drafting and reviewing of contracts and other legal documents.
- Responsible for handling and overseeing of litigation and disputes in the area as well as engagement and managing of external legal counsel including legal budget.
- Supporting the debt collection team with litigation for outstanding claims.
- Advising on various engagements with government authorities.
- Supporting other internal stakeholders on legal matters such as Human Resources, HSSE and procurement.
- Management of corporate governance, statutory compliance and licensing matters.
What we are looking for
- Previous experience as legal professional in the Eastern Africa Area and preferably qualified to practice as an advocate in Tanzania.
- A minimum of 4 years’ experience as in-house counsel in a multi-national company or in private practice at a reputable firm (or both).
- A minimum of a Master’s degree and having worked as qualified lawyer will be an advantage (Bachelor degree is Mandatory).
- Mastery of corporate law, commercial contracting, litigation proceedings and regulatory matters.
- Experience in shipping law and/or logistics and mergers and acquisitions will be an advantage.
- Good understanding of compliance laws and policies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Fluent in English.
