BACKGROUND

Farm Radio International (FRI) is a Canadian organization that has been working since 1979 to harness the power of radio, mobile telephones and other ICTs to meet the needs of rural and marginalized communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. We work with more than 1,300 radio organizations located in more than 37 African countries to fight poverty and food insecurity. With the benefit of FRI resources and training, our broadcasting partners deliver practical, relevant, and timely information to tens of millions of farmers, including women farmers. We also work with a range of partners to implement radio projects that address specific development challenges and community needs.

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

From January to December 2025, Farm Radio International (FRI), with support from Nutrition International (NI), will implement the Interactive Radio Enhancing Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and Nutrition among Adolescents in Tabora region, Tanzania. This initiative is part of the Building Rights for Improved Girl’s Health in Tanzania (BRIGHT) project aimed at empowering adolescents and stakeholders by providing crucial SRH and nutrition information.

FRI will collaborate with BRIGHT stakeholders to create interactive radio programs, including Participatory Radio Series (PRS) and Drama Plus (Drama+), that will be aired in swahili by partner stations in Tabora region. These programs will target adolescents aged 10 to 19 years, as well as parents, service providers, and local leaders.

The project aims to increase awareness of SRH and nutrition rights, promote positive behaviors and attitudes towards adolescents’ health and social well-being and garner support from community leaders, and enhance stakeholder engagement on these issues.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Project Officer will be responsible for ensuring effective implementation, reporting, monitoring and evaluation of project activities and tasks assigned to attain the goals and objectives of FRI projects. The Project Officer reports to the Country Program Coordinator and collaborates with all FRI and host agency staff members in the Country office.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Project Implementation (50%)

  • Coordinate and manage all aspects of project implementation as guided,

    including activity work plan development, activity roll-out, and progress monitoring to ensure timely and within-budget completion.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align on project objectives and activities, address potential issues, and maintain project quality standards.
  • Actively assist and support project events such as meetings, workshops and training.
  • Spearhead the strategy, establishment and follow up of community listening groups across the project area.
  • Coordinating report writing processes in order to synthesize activities, results, conclusions and lessons learned from projects
  • Ensuring the achievement of results in relation to gender equality and inclusion through the provision of comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and nutrition information to foster positive behaviors and attitudes towards adolescents ‘ health and social well being throughout the duration of the project cycle.
  • Undertake other program administration tasks as and when necessary

Project Monitoring and Evaluation (30%)

  • Implement project and community listening group monitoring activities on a

    regular basis (weekly or bi-weekly)

  • Coordinate and/or support pre-broadcast research activities such as formative research, baseline surveys and rapid appraisals.
  • Support summative, outcome and impact evaluation activities for this project and other projects as assigned
  • Contribute the preparation of various knowledge-sharing products for various audiences
  • Contribute to the sharing of learning and evidence of best practices internally in order to enable Farm Radio country program staff to improve their approaches and impacts.

Communication and Radio Networking (20%)

  • Contribute content to the Social Media Accounts specific for the project through

    regular updates

  • Document and share to the FRI communication team the success stories, best practices and lessons learned with regard to the project implementation
  • Facilitate WhatsApp group interactions among the youth beneficiaries and discussions with expert guests.
  • Promote FRI resources to radio partners, via WhatsApp, telephone and other opportunities
  • Support marginalized radio broadcasters to use FRI resources to improve their radio programming
  • Support the production of radio resources
  • Recruit new network members (radio stations) and encourage inactive partners to renew their membership

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant should possess a first Degree in Communication, Community

    Development, Nutrition, Gender, Development Studies, Project Management or related fields

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in working with NGOs at entry level.
  • Practical experience in radio programming is a plus;
  • Experience of conducting on-the-job training to radio broadcasters will be an added advantage
  • Previous experience in the areas of communication for development is an added advantage;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and time management skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and produce quality work within a short deadline;
  • Fluency in English and Swahili written and oral communication
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of and skills in Social Behaviour Change, project management and Monitoring Evaluation Research and Learning (MERL)
  • Excellent report writing skills
