The Tanzania Meat Board (TMB) was established under section 8 of the Meat Industry Act, No. 10 of 2006 (Cap 421). The Board was officially inaugurated on 14th November, 2008. In the light of its legal mandate provided in the Act, the Board plays an important role in regulating and promoting the development of meat sub sector in the country and it has great influence on socio-economic and well-being of the Tanzanian. In the early 2000s, the Government in collaboration with the stakeholders of the meat industry saw the importance of reviving the meat industry and held a meeting of livestock sector stakeholders held in Arusha between the 2nd and 4th of April 2001, under the chairmanship of the former interim President the third Mr. Benjamin W. Mkapa. The meeting identified challenges and suggested the best way to face them as opportunities. Among the identified challenges are the processing of livestock products, the market and finding out that little value addition to livestock products is explained by the absence of classification of livestock and its products. Also, the absence of processing infrastructure, substandard services, packaging of livestock products, high prices of packaging and poor management.
